Do you use Skype?

submitted on March 14, 2011 by clover in "Member's Lounge", last updated on March 16, 2011 by YanBz
I am 55 and I live in Florida. My parents are in North Carolina. I got my Mom using a computer around 8 years ago. She is now on her second computer that I suggested for her. She does all of her stock market stuff on the computer but when it comes to technology she needs help. For Christmas I got us both Kodak webcams so we could "Skype." She told me that is the best gift I could ever have given the two of them. They are 80 and it is such a great feeling to be able to see them when we talk. Skype is "free" and if you have family especially older family members that you might not think would even like "Skype" think again! If you have Parents, Grandparents, Grandchildren or other family members buy them an inexpensive webcam. I am glad I did it! I have tried Google Video Chat but we can't get it to work!

Do you video chat on the internet?

We've probably tried all of the free video chat programs over the past 5 years, and found Skype to be the best one. We've used Skype from the beginning when it was in beta, and it worked reliably on systems with the least resources. Now we wonder how we ever settled for a phone call when we can see each other! And it's absolutely great for letting the kids "show and tell" their personal news to grandparents who live far away. We've taken a laptop on a walking tour of the garden and even included a greeting from the dogs, all great fun at no cost.

I need to get in on this. I always hear of my parents Skypeing with my sister and nephew. I am always one of the last people to get in on a new technology.

I use Skype all the time from my iPod Touch with wifi. It's been very reliable and easy to use and I always try to do Skype to Skype calls so that it's free. Big Grin

I skype with my folks about once a week or once every other week. I love being able to see them since if I want to drive to their house, it'll take me roughly 21 hours and they love getting to visit with their grandson. It's cool that he knows their faces/voices when we get on video chat. We also starting skyping with our friends who moved to Wisconsin so our baby boys can wave to each other on the screen. It's so cute!

My brother "Skypes" on his laptop and walked me through his house that they completely renovated. Here's "this" and here's "that." Great feeling!

Isn't it amazing!? Now if only I can get the rest of my family, especially my sister, on board!

The mister skypes with his business associate in Australia all the time which is International calling, so we subscribe for unlimited talk minutes for $13.99 a month rather than pay-as-you-go minutes.

We use Skype a lot to video chat with our relatives in Ukraine. It's a huge help considering we go there only once every 3 years.
