What's Your Most Expensive Habit?

submitted on July 30, 2010 by webbyone2010 in "Member's Lounge"
There are any number of other habits that eat away at your wallet. Perhaps you're exceedingly tidy and spend more than usual on cleaning supplies. Or maybe you leave the TV on all day and night. Perhaps you can't go more than two weeks without getting your hair cut or styled.

That's why we want to know what things you do habitually that cost you the most cash. Step into the comments confessional below...

http://consumerist.com/2010/07.....habit.html
It's cable TV for me.

Godiva chocolates and therapeutic massages. Not at the same time though -that can get a little messy. And fortunately I have found a 1 hour massage in town that only costs $25.

eating... If only I didn't need nutrition I could save all kinds of money!

But seriously, I'd have to say eating out and junk food.

Buying and Cooking with organic foods. I used to get the cheap stuff at the grocery store, but since I had my son, food recalls always seem to happen and all those pesticides, preservatives, etc make me nervous. So I switched to organic. I buy a lot at local farmers markets. The food quality is so good and it even tastes better, but the price tag is sometimes double the cost of what I used to buy.

hmmm...smoking, for me. I'm going to quit and set my quit date Aug 1 so wish me luck! I figured up how much I'd save and at a minimum, it would be around $150/month. Oh, but the gadgets I could buy with that! I have this particular camera in mind....

Good luck! Smoking has to be my worst habit too. Between me and hubby smoking we spend around $200 a month. I wish it was easier to quit but man it's a pain.

I never smoke and type at the same time lol. I don't smoke in my house at all and never around my kids. They don't deserve to deal with my bad habit.

Good Luck with quitting. I quit myself almost 4 years ago. It may have been one of the hardest addictions to break, it was the best investment I've made in my own future financially and health wise. If you can remember the benefits outweigh the initial weeks of unease, you'll be well on your way to quitting for life.

I like to travel a lot and we spend all the money we save on trips to far-away places. Does this count as a hobby or a disease? Smile

And a great disease to have... Its a great goal for saving and something that you can keep unlike most the habits listed here. You will keep those memories and experiences, long after our food is eaten, cigarettes smoked, and gadgets broken or out dated.

I'm fairly certain you have children and those experiences will help them in their education and social activities for years to come. Learning is based upon past knowledge and experiences so the more you can cram in their the better!

Soda - diet but lots of soda w/ caffeine - it's the caffeine I'm addicted too. I can't find an alternative form of caffeine I like enough to substitute. I don't drink coffee and rarely tea.

Try crystal light energy. It's wild strawberry. You mix it with a 16.9 oz bottle of water and it only has 10 calories. I used to be a dew drinker but switched to that with no problem. It's not much cheaper ($2-$3 a box) but there's more coupons for it than soda, and it's a little better for ya.

This's an easy question. Spending money on my children & only grandson!! Way too much! You can't even walk into our son's room anymore, but Dad's responsible for a lot of it!

I started young....very young. My oldest son, David, just turned 28, my daughter, Shanna, will be 27 tomorrow & Noah is 11. My grandson, James, was born in Oct. But thanks anyway! I feel pretty old these days after a stint in the hospital last week. Wonder where I disappeared to for a while?

Wow! I see too many of mine already listed here! Books, restaurants, decadent dogs, "collections", more!
A little "hobby" can quickly turn into an expensive habit. Sad
And sometimes you don't even enjoy them, like when keeping a car too long becomes a hobby ('cause you love it and pour money into repairs). Same with boats - they've been described as "holes in the water surrounded by fiberglass, into which you throw money!"
