I never noticed that Staples had an "Outdoors & Recreation" section before. http://www.staples.com/Outdoor.....cat_CG2801
They have 1623 items listed online only - mailboxes, fire pits, pool floats, pool cleaning accessories, grills, tents and camping gear, outdoor decor, even patio furniture. They'll ship to you for free, or to your local store.
I think these are strange items for an office supply store to sell. What's going on? Maybe they think you'll buy office stuff on the same order?
And today I see a toothpaste tube in their logo!
This must be the "Reinvention of Staples" described in this article - http://www.fool.com/investing/.....gress.aspx
After declining sales, declining profits, and continued store closures due to weak demand for office supplies Staples is apparently "branching out into new areas."
Out with the old, in with the new
Amidst weak demand for the traditional office products which are Staples' specialty, the company is broadening its business model. As sales of ink, toner, and paper products decline, Staples is adding new categories, like break-room supplies and furniture, in an effort to become a one-stop-shop for businesses. During the third quarter [of 2013], Staples added 70,000 new items on its website, with the goal of adding another 100,000 by year-end.
