This is a shocker to me, as I think of the WSJ as the consummate businessman's newspaper, and it's hard for me to visualize a businessman clipping coupons. But apparently publishers of the Journal may think otherwise and, in their attempt to become a full-service newspaper, have taken the SmartSource coupon insert away from the New York Sunday Times!
Actually what really happened is that SmartSource's owner, News America Marketing, decided to switch to The Journal. Perhaps that is because News America Marketing and The Journal are both owned by News Corp. But News America Marketing said the decision to switch SmartSource to the Journal was not primarily about their corporate relationship, and the Times declined to comment.
Newspapers typically get paid for providing distribution to inserts such as SmartSource.
The Weekend Journal containing the coupon insert will be available on Saturday.
The comments here make pretty good reading, as well.
