Vending Machine That Pays You

submitted on May 11, 2010 by YanBz in "Member's Lounge"
Pepsi in partnership with Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful are trying out a new type of vending machine - the one that pays you for disposing off empty cans.

To use the machine, people can just scan the barcode of their empty PET plastic bottle or aluminum can, and then insert it into the slot. The Dream Machine calculates how many points to dole out for that particular container. Points can then be redeemed for prizes at the host venue or on Greenopolis.com.

I love the idea. The machines are currently installed only in some North Carolina Rite Aid stores, but I hope they will find their way to other states soon

I assume these are above and beyond redeemable containers? Most Massachusetts supermarkets and liquor stores have machines to redeem deposit containers (soda and beer).

We have deposit here in Michigan- 10 cents a container so this probably wouldnt work here. But I hate throwing them away in other states, great idea. Maybe it would help lead to having deposit and recycling centers in other states too?
