For the most part, 99% of coupons that are scanned at the register search the transaction for the items purchased before deducting the coupon amount. If its free item the scan may not find the item and thats when the clerk looks for the purchased product to manually key in amount or barcode. Retailers can print an override exclusion report to see what clerks are overriding coupons and price codes.
For free items or even Buy 1 Get 1 Free, the coupon doesn't have the exact value on it. There is a limit, but the cashier has to find the actual amount and enter it manually.
In the Kroger fraud case, they were overriding any coupon, even normal cents-off coupons, and assigning a higher value to it.
I work in a restaurant that distributes coupons. I see so many people who cut off the expiration date so their coupon is still "valid". I can tell because we color code most of them. It doesn't bother me that much if it's a coupon that we still have in rotation. I just hate when people get angry with me when I tell them that their coupon isn't valid with certain menu items they have ordered, especially when it's printed on the coupon and on the menu.
Anyone notice they are issuing coupons without the scannable barcode now? Walmart will not take them even though you can go on their website and print them! About a third of the coupons in the Sunday paper this week were not scannable. The only store that will take them so far is Bi-Lo.
I also never get any problem, Only some times I got problems with rite aid coupon scanner but then if cashier hide half( small code) bar code of the coupon it easily scan
clover, go to walmart.com and print the coupon for Listerine. You will notice the barcode to the left that you have to scan at the register is no longer there.
TheBest, I usually just cover up all but the small code with my thumb when scanning at a self scan. The small code is the one that's missing. That is the problem. The cashier at Bi-lo has seen many of these and she manually takes the coupon off. The younger cashiers don't know what to do if they scan it and it does'nt scan. LOL!
I think that is the scaner problem, old scaner doesn't scan new bar coded coupons. It happened some times at rite aid , I complained to customer care about store and scaner, wrote on their survey (they had $3 off $15 coupon for survey) then they started to enter it manually LOL
