Thousands of sites loaded with potent malware cocktail

Cybercriminals have laced about 2,000 legitimate websites with a potent malware cocktail that surreptitiously attacks people who browse to them, a security researcher warned Friday.

A ZDNet blogger and a Washington Post columnist agree it's time to ditch Windows for online banking and shopping, because the risk of having your bank details or credit card information compromised is a huge time-consuming hassle that people can do without.

They propose a way to not only protect yourself from malware and Windows-based vulnerabilities, but also from phishing attacks. They suggest using a Live CD just for banking and shopping (no email, no Facebook/MySpace etc.). You boot into the Live CD, complete your transactions, and close the OS when you’re done.
    It couldn’t be simpler.

    * Download a Linux ISO (his favorite is Ubuntu but there are loads of others to choose from).
    * Burn the ISO to CD (he recommends ImgBurn).
    * Pop the CD into your drive and boot up from the CD when you want to bank or shop … take a couple of minutes and it’s 100% safe since nothing can write to the CD).

    Simple. Safe. Effective.

Good recommendation HouTex. It is also possible to have a bootable flash drive Linux OS. Check out for ISOs and instructions. Some of the Linux distros, such as Slax and Puppylinux, have really fast boot times as well.

Actually yours is the best idea, for portability. And with the larger sizes and cheaper prices on flash drives these days, it's pretty affordable to have several.

Although I use Windows almost all the time, Puppy Linux is my favorite OS. Right now I am on Windows 7 Ultimate (RTM)
