Tax Filing Day April 18th for 2016
Relax an extra 3 days! The IRS has extended the filing of taxes for 2016 with the deadline date of April 18th, due to Emancipation Day. Emancipation Day is Washington D.C.state holiday and is always recognized on April 16th, however with this year falling on a Saturday, it will be recognized on April 15th and the Federal Offices closed.
On April 16, 1862, Abraham Lincoln, who was the US president at the time, signed the Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed more than 3000 slaves in the District of Columbia.
On January 4, 2005, Mayor Anthony A. Williams signed legislation making Emancipation Day an official public holiday in the District. Although Emancipation Day occurs on April 16, by law when April 16 falls during a weekend, Emancipation Day is observed on the nearest weekday
