Target recently pulled sheets sold under the Fieldcrest label from store shelves and its website. Now the company is offering a full refund to customers who bought them between August 2014 and July 2016. On Aug. 19, 2016 Target discovered that 750,000 sheets and pillowcases supplied by Welspun were mislabeled as Egyptian cotton, confirming that the textile manufacturer substituted another type of non-Egyptian cotton when producing these sheets during that time frame.
Egyptian cotton has a longer fiber that creates a softer thread than other cotton, so it usually sells at a higher price because shoppers consider it to be higher quality.
According to Bloomberg, the sheets were manufactured by Welspun India, a global textile company that's a key supplier to many US retailers including Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart, JCPenney, and Macy's. Target has decided to phase out all Welspun products. Target is Welspun’s second-biggest customer, behind Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.
