Cool! Borders used to send coupons to cell phones, but for some reason they stopped. I can tell you from my was so much more convenient! I would go to work and get a text offer and then later in the day I would go shopping...and the best part, was I didn't have to have a coupon...I just showed them my screen on my cell. Since they stopped doing the texts, I haven't shopped there much. I just don't think about going there. When they sent the texts, I didn't have to worry about getting my emails printed to clip the coupon. Kudos to Target...this will increase business for them!

In today's news release, March 10, 2010 - New Target Mobile Coupons can be scanned at checkout:

Target is the first national retailer to offer a scannable mobile coupon program that allows guests to receive exclusive offers directly on their mobile phones. Coupons are redeemed by scanning a barcode on the phone at checkout.

Guests can opt-in to the program on their PC at, on their phone at or by texting COUPONS to 827438 (TARGET). After opt-in, guests receive a text message with a link to a mobile Web page that contains multiple offers, all accessible through a single barcode. Offers are single use and expire on the date listed.

Target's point-of-sale scanning technology makes mobile coupons possible, and Target is the first major retailer with the ability to scan mobile barcodes in all of its stores. In addition to using the new mobile coupons, Target guests can access their Target Mobile GiftCards, view online assortments, check product availability and store locations, manage their Target gift registry and lists, browse the weekly ad, and receive text and e-mail notifications of great deals -- all via their mobile phones.

A NY Times article about mobile coupons which mentions Target's new program:

How many times have you heard the prediction that one day, businesses like coffee shops will send us coupons on our mobile phones when we walk by?

That has long been the dream of mobile marketers. Still, only 9 percent of people have received a coupon or discount code on their phones based on where they were standing, according to new data from Compete, a Web analytics firm.

This could be the year that changes. People are increasingly interested in receiving coupons on their phones, especially at the grocery store, Compete found. On Wednesday, Target announced that it would start sending mobile coupons.

I always forget to take paper coupons with me (Well, not always). When Borders sent out cell coupons, I was more apt to use them because they were in my mind and I didn't have to carry thewm with me. Much easier to show cell phone screen. I signed up for Target's program last month.
