Feeding off the popularity of energy drinks, Taco Bell and PepsiCo are both introducing a drink made with Mountain Dew and Orange Juice
. Gizmodo called the Taco Bell concoction "the hydrogen bomb of fast food creativity," and it's already being sold with their breakfast menu until 11 am at 800 test locations in 14 states. If it proves to be popular, a nationwide rollout could come by 2014.
It's hard to imagine these flavors combining into something less than toxic. Have you tried it? If so, consider cutting down on your sugar intake for the rest of the day: OJ packs around 20 grams of sugar per cup, and The Dew holds a whopping 31 grams. A 16-ounce cup of Mtn Dew A.M. has 160 calories.
High fructose corn syrup is the second ingredient on the Mountain Dew label. By my calculations, there are 102 grams of sugar in Taco Bell's 16-oz breakfast drink, and nobody's even counting the caffeine levels....
At least it's low in sodium.
PepsiCo plans to introduce their Kickstart product in retail packaging next year
, hoping to see double-digit sales increases like those companies marketing the Monster, Red Bull, and Rockstar energy drinks.
