SMS Text to donate to aid victims of Haiti's earthquake

submitted on January 13, 2010 by equipurple in "Member's Lounge"
Musician Wyclef Jean has put his Yele Haiti Foundation into action to help victims of the earthquake that ravaged Haiti yesterday.
“Please text ‘Yele’ to 501501 to donate $5 to YELE HAITI,” he wrote in the hours following the quake. “Your money will help with relief efforts. They need our help… please help if you can.” The $5 donation will be charged to your phone bill.

Be careful to whom you make donations for the Haiti disaster.

It was on the news tonight that in times of disaster that scammers come out of the woodwork to cash in on people wanting to help those who are hit by disasters such as this one.

They're warning of websites that ask for donations, people that call you asking for money to help those in Haiti, etc.

They're not saying not to donate, just to be careful and checkout whomever is asking for the donation before you become a victim of these scammers.

For those that don't know, I am an employee of a major non profit. A name you would recognize and I can't emphasize enough how important it is that you donate to reputable non profits. As midget said, many non profits will pop up now claiming to help. But in my expert opinion, you money is best donated to the Red Cross. Many communities will start to collect food and water and clothing, most of that stuff will end up in a warehouse. If you want to help, give money and give blood, that is what is needed most right now...Thank you.

Red Cross has its own texting option: text the phrase “Haiti” to the number 90999 and donate $10 to the Red Cross. This has raised over $2 million as of early this morning.

Actually making the credit card phone call might be better, as it can take up to 90 days to get the funds. MGive, one of the leading text donation vendors, is trying to speed that up and has also waived its licensing fees to the Red Cross in the wake of this disaster.
