Since the first New Year's fireworks began in New Zealand at 4:30 am EST today, I thought it was appropriate to wish everyone a Happy New Year a few hours before the time comes to the U.S. If you're not among those who can enjoy the Times Square Ball drop in New York City, there are lots of other drops across the country.
From the moon pie over Mobile AL, oranges in Miami FL and Orange County CA, to the peach drop in Atlanta GA, a car-sized potato in Boise ID and a pinecone in Flagstaff AZ, quite a few odd items are scheduled to be dropped to celebrate the New Year.
Easton, MD - 6-foot red crab
Plymouth, WI - 50-pound wedge of Sartori cheese
Las Cruces, NM - large chili
Niagara Falls, NY or Memphis & Nashville, TN - guitar
Raleigh, NC ("City of Oaks") - 900-lb copper and steel acorn
Mount Olive, NC or Dillsburg, PA - pickle
Tuscon, AZ - taco
Hershey, PA - 300-lb 7-foot aluminum foil wrapped fiberglass kiss
Vincennes, IN - 18-foot watermelon ball that releases a load of locally grown watermelons to a "splatform" below
