Should store reps be allowed to post deals (Take a Poll)

submitted on June 11, 2010 by YanBz in "Buxr Website / Contests"
So far Buxr has been open for everyone to share shopping deals including store reps provided they disclose who they are. The idea is that store reps are in the best position to know when the store they represent runs a promotion or has a hot product, and they can describe the deal accurately.

Based on what I see, it hasn't quite worked out that way. Big stores have outsourced marketing to affiliated third parties who automatically feed promotions to their partners and media. Smaller companies do take time to come to Buxr to share what they have however I don't see the dedication I expected in the way they do it. Very often it looks like someone there has a few minutes to spare and they come and post whatever is up for sale at that time giving little thought to the competitiveness of the price or the quality of the information presented.

Another issues is that almost never you will see a comment left by a store rep. They essentially choose not to engage for one reason or another (I will be curious to see if anyone of the store reps comes forward to comment to this discussion topic Smile ).

I am concerned that this mindless deal posting damages the website and our members by adding noise that we all have to wade through. I need your help in deciding on whether the store reps should be allowed to continue posting deals going forward. Please take the poll and share your thoughts in the comments.
1. Should store reps be allowed to post deals?
 I don't care
2. Why do you think store reps do not engage?
Buxr is a small fish (that brings little business) and time is money for store owners
They do not know that Buxr has an active & dedicated community of shoppers
They are afraid they will get a tough question they will not be able to answer
Online social shopping has not become norm yet and stores don't know how to deal with it

I am curios too to see of a comment comes from a rep defending themselves.

Aren't you missing a chance for advertising dollars if you are allowing store reps to post for free?

I think that the reps are often reserved when it comes to commenting here. Most of the deals I've seen them post have been outdone by deals of this community and our savvy members are often able to find better priced deals elsewhere.

It seems to be store reps just post whatever random item that they want. It's a way of free advertising for them so they take advantage of it. I remember a while back someone posted a $2 off coupon in the discussion forum for a certain merchant that posts here (I won't say who) but they could have added it to their deals. They aren't looking to post a good buy, they are looking to make a sale.

A small clarification/disclosure about "free advertising". Buxr has affiliate agreements with select stores, including some of those that have reps posting deals here. This way we get a commission when someone buys stuff featured on Buxr. I am sure I discussed this in the past and if you like we can talk about it more in a separate thread.

This however has no influence on this particular decision. The quality of content/deals is primary, affiliations are secondary. If the store reps post crappy deals then affiliation doesn't make any difference because nobody will buy anything. Even worse, visitors can find Buxr not worthy their time and leave entirely (which is obviously the last thing I want to happen)

This is very simple. Store reps don't have the right incentive to post good deals. High percentage coupons and discounted products are money l***** to them.

I don't mind store reps posting, but I do mind them not posting complete information. For example, the past 2 days, I have activated ChronoShark has not completed their posting fully. Their site clearly states the standard shipping charge and they leave it out.

Also to the store rep, prehaps you should consider a free shipping or discount code for Buxr users. Perhaps that will give an incentive to users to purchase products.

I have no problems with them posting either. It would make sense for them to post GREAT deals or maybe an exclusive coupon to draw interest to it. Otherwise its very likely our community has already seen their deals and decided it wasn't worth our time to post it anyways.

I just received an email from one of store reps who read this discussion thread.

As one of the reps that doesn’t abuse the system, and sees the value in the ability to share less publicly available offers, I think it would be a shame to turn it off completely. Though, as someone who’s participated in forums, and still does, there’s generally a reason why most of the other forums adopt a similar policy. Perhaps you could simply allow reps a single post or 2 per month- they must be selective with the offers they share. That would combat the spam issue.

As far as reps not being incented (one of the comments) because it’s money lost from us… it’s not the case at all. In fact, the stronger the offer, the more people shop through my channel, and the better things are for me. I’m constantly pushing for the strongest consumer offer possible that doesn’t have negative margin so that the consumer shops more.

By the way, this store rep never posted deals on Buxr.
