Should "Member's Reputation Points" be Removed?

submitted on May 28, 2010 by deby32953 in "Buxr Website / Contests"
I don't understand the purpose for the Member's Reputation points under their profile. I just noticed that my red score kept rising. I finally clicked on it to find it was a popularity contest. It scored how many times someone clicked negatively on your comments. Buxr asks you to comment on your vote. Your reason is your honest opinion & you shouldn't be down voted for 1st being asked for it, then giving it. This is totally unfair. Powerusers down vote newcomers' comments to maintain their high scores for the monthly contests. That makes this website like a high school click. A popularity contest that make some members threaten & verbally abuse othersto keep their status. What are we encouraging by having a "Member's Reputation Points" score?

The popularity reflects how other members perceive your comments, no more no less. Popularity doesn't affect your contest standing or chances to win a prize. It is just a statistical number.

I would strongly argue against your statement that "powerusers down vote newcomers' comments to maintain their high scores for the monthly contests". To understand why you should know the history of Buxr. I will try to give you a brief introduction.

About a year ago we had endless neg vote wars between members when some of us would use any excuse to negatively vote each other's deals, things like "I don't like this product" and so on. Over time we have come to an agreement that to avoid confrontation with each other we should only neg vote a deal that completely has no value or results in lost money / time by the shopper. Otherwise if you don't like a deal you just don't vote. This is where it stands right now and this is why many members strongly reacted to your massive neg votes.

Hope this clarifies a few things for you Smile

Don't you think you should fill in your new members that become active? Instead when we're asked to vote on deals we see this, "Do you honestly feel that it is not a good deal? Then vote it down, and say why! You can bet that the rest of the Buxr community will chime in and share their thoughts too!" (That's for sure) Maybe you should add that clause to this quote instead of new members actually doing what it says & then being slammed, outcast & verbally abused for it.

These Member Reputation points have nothing to do w/good deals being submitted & voted on. They're used for hurtful revenge & serve no purpose.

Mooncow called my topic trivial & said I clearly demonstrate I don't get it. How rude.

Midget voted neg 60x on my comments, 1 on a positve suggestion I left. Clearly unfair. Can Member Reputation points be reduced when 1 person sets out to destroy you?

Still this is not the forum for a popularity contest. It's not done on similar websites & only serves to hurt & insult other members.

Deby, I can tell your on the defensive here, and thats cool, but let an old timer give you some more advice. Advice that I know to be true from my own experience as a member.

In a few weeks, maybe a month or two at most, you will find that that the red part of you reputation is overshadowed by the green part. If you just trust me and let it go for now, you will find that a single opposing member cannot destroy you, as there as simply too many members on Buxr.

How many are there since I see only about 6 names over & over again placing deals?

Deby, your attacks on Mooncow have no ground. It was me who called your question trivial (which it is for all old times here). Mooncow simply voted up my comment and this is why it shows up in her member activity profile.

It also appears you are taking words out of the context. Here is my complete comment with some other very different words that you chose to omit (the stress is mine).

Midget, you should give Deby a bit of a credit. She has been active for just several days and hasn't gotten familiar with all the Buxr kinks. In fact she just now posted her very first discussion topic asking pretty trivial questions about negative votes clearing demonstrating she doesn't get it.

I think we all should be a bit patient and attempt to explain her how things work and steer her into the right direction. Some people get it sooner than the others, this might be the case of "other" for one or another reason. I am very hopeful however that she will get it soon

On a side note, this comment was made in a power member area of the forum and the very fact that you were able to read it via member activity page is an accident caused by a (now fixed) bug in the Buxr code

True, I didn't quote the whole discussion, just the insults. So why would you post my discussion if you thought my topic was "trivial" & I was clearly demonstrating I "didn't get it?" And to say some members get it sooner than others & I may be a case of "other" for some reason or another?" Is that helpful criticism? Oh, I forgot. Was said in secrecy, in a power member forum where you talk negatively behind member's backs. I thought everything was for public viewing. The same people harassing me are all part of your "forum."

And as far as the Member Rep points not affecting contest points:

    Comments & Topics Point System
Members can gain or lose points from other members voting up/down their comments or topics.

1.Each positive vote gives the submitter 2 points.
2.Each negative vote costs the submitter 1 point.
The topic/comment must be less than 1 day old to accumulate points. Only members with a total score of 50 points and 5 days tenure can give other members points. In order to prevent friendly voting and voting wars, only your first 5 votes in a 1 day period can earn points when voting for any individual member.

I think think the problem is I'm starting to "get it" more than you want me to.

Deby, you are coming on too strong, too fast, way too early, with too little knowledge.

I've been trying to talk you down for the last 24 hours, but I'm losing my patience too.

I'm trying to help you here, but you're getting overly worked up here, and you're wandering into the realm of being combative. At this point, the only member hurting you is you.

Relax a little, for your own good, and take some time to watch and learn. I'm saying all of this with the best of intentions and I'm trying to be kind... work with me here. Smile

I'm tring but you're not working w/me. I gave you 1-800-BUY-MACY & you call local store who never know what's going on. I call Macy's asking for more proof & was given the private, unlisted # to their corporate office & emailed you begging you to call. It would've taken 2 min. Not my deal, I gain nothing. Your comment about "your interesting call" made me look stupid & dishonest when I POSITIVELY it's ligit. My rep.'s been damaged & until I upload my receipt from Mon./Tues. I'll continue to be made fun of & disbelieved. Not a good way to get & keep members. I got my coupon 3 wks ago, printed, cut out, forgot until sifting through papers. Normally not one I'd use but thought you would. (Not personally) Big Grin My delete box empties every week due to quantity of email so had to search. Found on Deallig.com as legit coupon. That hurts.

Deby, your reputation went sour after you neg voted so many deals. I don't think anyone cared much (besides maybe Solstice and midget Smile ) about the rejected Macy's coupon.

You should really calm down and move one. If you cannot then I am afraid Buxr is not the right place for you.

Didn't see this post till now. I'm always calm & laid back. Just type 100 wpm but find it hard to tolerate people of supposedly high position not believing me. You didn't believe phone #s I gave you, didn't beleive they emailed it to me weeks ago, don't believe I called & had it verified twice, don't believe I was given # to unlisted corporate office. 1 call would get me rep back on this one. I don't care about dumb coupon. It's a matter of principal.

Looks like I'm blocked from submitting deals anyway. Nice that your powerplayers are adding neg marks to every comment I make including ones such as, "...I'll comply..." Can't win for losing here. Your club is closed!

And I'm not worked up at all. Cool as a cucumber. Whole thing is stupid. Nothing I said was "combative," just facts. I asked a good question, if my forum question was bad, why did you post?

And then I quoted your rules.

Deby, your question was't bad. It was trivial. I am glad however you asked it. It is a sign that you make an effort to understand things and I did my best to attempt to eplain how things work in my reply.

"Trivial" wasn't said as an insult but rather a way to prove to midget that you are a novice and neg vote deals because you don't understand "Buxr culture" (as opposite to "you hate everyone"). Smile

      Hope this helps

I don't know anyone. Was voting on deals per instructions given(not your secret instructions)not people. Didn't even look at names. How can that be equated to I hate everyone? Childish. Really think you should post new voting protocol for all members & visitors to see.

I know you didn't respond to Macy's since you consider it DEAD topic but this is 2nd yr Macy's used promo, same coupon is saving them $$ according to corporate office & no year on coupon was deliberate. Will probably use again next year. Would feel validated if you'd just make a quick call. 1-310-854-6665 Macy's Store Center

Daby, I reviewed the original 2009 submission of this coupon (and re-rejected yours as "duplicate" instead of "low-value). This should hopefully give an opportunity to settle things around that deal

Hopefully, others will call Macy's & start to verify as well. I just appreciate it being out there. It's the 1st time I was happy to receive notice that I'd submitted a duplicate deal.
