Sears Layoffs and Stores Closing

submitted on October 25, 2014 by HouTex in "Stores / Merchants"

Financial news tracker Seeking Alpha reported the following layoffs and store closings by Sears Holding Corp., in an effort to reverse mounting losses and sales drops. But a Sears spokesman disputed the count as "inaccurate." Read more at http://www.foxbusiness.com/mar.....ars-kmart/ and http://images.bidnessetc.com/i.....report.jpg
After Sears shuttered 75 Kmart stores and 21 Sears stores in the first half of 2014, they now plan to lay off at least 6,067 workers and close over 110 Kmart, Sears and Sears Auto Center locations before the end of January, many before Christmas. Sears is liquidating its location at the largest mall in America, the King of Prussia Mall in suburban Philadelphia, and will instead sublet the space to Primark, a low-cost Irish apparel chain. Sears closed its flagship Chicago store in April.

Closures include 55 Kmart, 30 Sears and 31 Sears Auto Center locations.
6,067 workers will lose their jobs.
Pennsylvania, Michigan and Indiana are hardest hit.

Cannot even think of any Kmart stores near me anymore. One is now in it's final days. I hope my Sears store stays open. Love the Lands' End store inside.

The last Kmart closest to me just closed. I grew up in Upstate NY and worked for Kmart in High School and then College. Not quite sure what they did wrong, maybe the merger with Sears.

Sears Holdings announced that they will close 78 Kmart stores and 26 Sears stores, most by the end of March. Closing of 30 Kmart and 16 Sears stores was announced in December.

They also reached a deal to sell their Craftsman tools brand to Stanley Black & Decker. A few months ago Sears put the Craftsman, Kenmore and DieHard brands up for sale in an effort to generate cash.

See the list of store closures here - http://www.usatoday.com/story/...../96195504/
The chain will still operate more than 1,300 stores after the closures and continue to sell the Craftsman brand.
