School clothes shopping with dress codes

submitted on September 8, 2011 by equipurple in "Products / Gadgets"
Anybody else out there sending kids to a school with dress codes?
My kids' new high school has a strict dress code that prohibits any tops with writing or graphic designs (smaller than a 3x3 post it note on the chest is allowed. Solids, stripes, prints, and plaids are ok.
Add to that my kids' own issues (not liking too many polos, not liking too many button downs), and my preference (disliking plain t-shirts as too casual for school), and we've been having issues filling their wardrobes.
No Hollister, A&F, Aeropostale, etc. No sports team or band or college logos.
Any help or thoughts?
1. Do your kids have school dress codes?
Parochial or prep school or other unfoirms. No choice, no worries--other than cost and childhood angst
Strict dress code: button down and khakis or similar
Restrictive dress codes: no logos, no spaghetti straps, no underwear showing, no graphic t-shirts
Laissez-fare dress code: nothing offensive or obscene
No kids or no school to worry about
2. What is your personal preference of dress c odes?
Make them look the same, there's no jealousy or class difference
Proper dress is good, prepares them for a proper adult business world
Keep them safe and sane, but let their individualities blossom
They're kids. Let it all hang out

Although you have to adhere to the code, accessories are what can make them show their individuality and still adhere to wearing the same as the next kid. Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches,, if not covered with a dress code.

As for clothes that ARE allowed, try focusing on their favorite colors as opposed to "styles". Even though Plain T shirts are well, plain, you can get ringer Tees with the colors around the collar and sleeves making it dressier but within dress code. V neck Ts can be dressy, too.
