Wal-mart, Target and other large retailers are trying to force mayor online retailers, including Amazon to collect sales tax on purchases. Amazon doesn't collect sales tax in Texas and most other states, which some big retailers say gives it an unfair advantage.
Amazon is the biggest online retailer after walmart, target and few others and it is the marketing strategy that makes it a big success today. No Taxes + Free shipping on most products make it a standout among others and that's why people love Amazon! WM and Target have to charge taxes because they are a B&M company. Just because they are not as popular as Amazon should not be a reason to force it to charge taxes.
My state gets enough money from me by taxing the heck out everything and imposing county and locale taxes as well. Every year that I've lived here I've had to pay in to the state on my income taxes. Oh, how I miss Texas.
States should be more organized and just cause they are in a RUT - they should not be looking for this way out. IN the long run - this will only hurt consumers ( think about it) Politicians are going to bring up issues like no budget and other reasons to pass this bill > voters will be happy > and will think politicians have done a good job. Once this law takes affect everything online becomes expensive ....think about it people. It will only cost us more .....the senators and lawmakers would not feel a pinch --- they already made their money.
And just because - states charge sales tax - they think they are going to make a lot of money to come out of the RUT they dug themselves in - look at CALIFORNIA - TAXES everything --- it's in the worst shape.
I don't know about other states, but in Ohio you are supposed to disclose any online or mail order purchases that you did not pay tax on. You are supposed to claim it on your state tax return. Not sure if anyone acutally does.
I think this is the case with all states, it is just that people seldom disclose this information on the tax return and it is very difficult for the IRS to go after the offenders
Yep, just found a confirmation towards the end of the article:
In California, which faces a $26.6 billion shortfall, only 1% of consumers pay use tax by voluntarily reporting online purchases on tax forms, and $1.1 billion goes uncollected, according to the state's legislative analyst.
If all California's paid taxes as the should have, the state might not have been in as deep of a financial hole as it is
