Request for shopping help... looking for cheap PC.

submitted on October 26, 2010 by WhattaDealBlog in "Products / Gadgets", last updated on October 27, 2010 by YanBz
So my wife needs a new PC for work. I'm extremely busy so I don't have time to adequately shop around. So how about some "crowd-sourcing" (Yea, now I'm new media elite!).

She needs a tower with Vista or Windows 7 (highly preferred), 1.5GHz or more multi-core (highly preferred) processor, 2-4GB of RAM, hard drive size is not important, graphics able to run a display of at least 1280x1024. Keyboard, mouse, monitor not required.

So not anything real special, actually looking for a CHEAP option. If we can't find one cheap enough we will likely just purchase a Windows 7 family pack and hope her old PC can hold out for a while longer.

Thanks for any help! Mr Green

Establish the one major classification criteria for people... "Use".

    (Basic) Word Processing + Internet
(Mid-Level) Minor Graphic Design + Sound Work
(High) Gaming / Auto-Cad Work / Professional Graphic Design

It sounds like your looking for the basic level user end of things.

Home internet based business work. Online multiple websites (likely 5-10 windows), a data base program, and a secure VPN connection.

No graphics or games. Only games would be flash games or pre-5 games for our 3 year old when not working.

ever thought about building one? You could build a fairly decent machine pretty cheap.

From my experience, building your own computer is more fun but usually costs more

I built my own PC, and it actually cost me less money.

If I were you I would buy a used Dell desktop at DFSDirectSales.com

    http://www.dfsdirectsales.com/.....p11867/cl1

They regularly have 20-25% coupons on desktops and you can find a good deal on a beefed up off lease computer. These are sold directly by Dell and come with 100 day limited warranty

I was also going to suggest Dell. They usually have good deals on new older models.

I can understand wanting to go to cheap but what is your budget for this? Cheap to you and cheap to me are probably two different things Mr Green

Some money can also be saved when buying a refurbished PC. I got an Acer low profile desktop to connect to my TV in the living room and paid under $400. It has an AMD 64 bit, 2.5 Ghz processor, 3GB RAM, DVD burner, HDMI. It has been extremely reliable and is pretty darn fast.

I'm looking to see if I can get one which meets the requirements for under $300. For much more than that I'll likely just update the OS.
