Regarding Recent Concerns Over Negative Voting

submitted on May 27, 2010 by Solstice in "Buxr Website / Contests"
The following is good advice intended for all community members...

1. I seem to recall one or two users out there who went neg crazy their first few days, and who are still here posting. Try to remember the kind words of wisdom other members shared with you.

2. Try explaining your viewpoint and opinion to users in a helpful and cordial fashion. Coming out with guns blazing and being nasty will not help anyone and only lead to unnecessary confrontation.

3. There are clear good and bad reasons to vote negativity on a deal, and not all negative voting falls into the bad category. There also exists a gray area of debate on what is deserving, which will always remain open to personal interpretation and opinion.

This discussion thread has been created to address this recent community concern, please forward all future comments and responses regarding this concern to this location.

(General Guideline Reminder) Please remember that you're not allowed to engage in name calling, personal attacks, or other such silliness that belongs on elementary school playgrounds.

This topic has been created to preserve Buxr appearance on deal posts.

Here was a comment of mine left on a deal earlier. This is how I feel to mostly all deals not just the Old Navy one it was posted on. I'm too lazy to type everything out again so here ya go: Mr Green

Some people do not wish to subscribe to every e-mail newsletter to get their sales. I for one do not ever shop at Old Navy so I don't subscribe. However if a sale is good enough I will go to a store or website that I wouldn't normally visit.

I know you are still new so I just want to give you a heads up about voting negative on deals. You should only vote negative on a deal if it is truly a bad deal. For instance you could get the product cheaper somewhere else. If you do that you should also post a link proving that there is a better deal available. If you truly think it is on ongoing deal than just flag it as low/no value and let the community decide.

    From the wiki:
Everyone likes to be positive. Vote negative only when it is truly deserved.

If there is any funny business with a deal, vote it negative. Deals that are not fair, not universal, cost too much, benefit the poster or some other side partner, those all qualify as junk deals and should be voted negatively. Fortunately, the Buxr staff and community ferret out most of these before they hit the main page.

Is there a better price on the same product (including shipping)? Vote it down! But be sure to post or point to the better deal.

Is the product out of stock? DON'T vote it negative. It might have been a great deal that you were just too late on. Instead, flag it as dead.

Is the product a piece of junk? Vote it down, but tell us that you bought one why it is not worth the rest of the community buying one.

Do you want to vote a deal negatively because the poster voted down one of yours? Come on, we're not in third grade anymore. :-O

Do you honestly feel that it is not a good deal? Then vote it down, and say why! You can bet that the rest of the Buxr community will chime in and share their thoughts too!

It's kinda getting out of hand. Not sure if she's reading the feedback or not, but most people have tried to explain how it works. Maybe send an e-mail out for wiki rules? Send it to everyone so no one feels singled out? Confused

      It's already out of hand.

Deby could easily use this clause as her reasoning for all her neg happiness.

You guys have a lot of room to talk, especially Solstice. Really nice being singled out & named here. Very professional. I skimmed through offers quickly & bad ones are easy 2 spot. I left quick, honest responses which is what I thought you wanted. Calling me a liar even w/proof & verifying coupons by talking is pure stupid. Someone's upset because I voted down a bunch of grocery coupons? You think I'm voting down for revenge like a 3rd grader? Sounds like someone w/experience. I don't even pay attention to who's posting the deal. As you see, I do pay attention to comments & discussion. Get real! Y'all just want to keep your lousy $ to yourselves. You can have it! HOW RUDE! Excuse me for being new & not understanding the + & - votes. I didn't know how to look back or even know that comments had been made on voting comments. I just took some time I saw I was threatened, called names and...from Midget: "I say stop voting on her deals till she can get a clue. She even negged a couple of Yans deals. Some nerve. lol" Was told my deals would be down voted to force me off. Midget should be thrown off the website. I was shocked. Tons of negative popularity? Is this high school? Good 'ole boys club? Down votes for nothing? Every time someone saw my name they down voted me. I don't even know what the scores mean & I'm not trying to win $. Don't need it. Stress my biggest enemy w/M.S. but I also don't like being forced off the website by someone like Midget. I'm just shocked! My comments weren't meant to be rude but short & factual as they pertained how the deal served me only. I was wrong. Honestly, I never read the rules but just jumped right in. Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings but didn't think you'd take it personally. Personal attacks on me are different. It's uncalled for & extremely hurtful as is being called a liar.

Wow! Okay everybody breathe. Have some zen thoughts. Think about green tea and yoga.

Alright, now that hopefully everybody is in their happy place, this can be discussed.

Deby, I apologize if you felt as though you were unduly singled out. In the last two days there was a great deal of concern raised about negative voting, and I thought it would be good to have a concrete discussion about it for all members.

Additionally, I thought that if you talked to some of the other community members, that you might receive some good and useful advice to aid you with your posting and time here. So in truth, the idea was to actually help you. You can't really fault people for wanting to do that. Smile

If you would like, I can offer you advice on anything, rules, voting, finding deals, or posting, just name the topic. I was a member like yourself for two years before becoming a moderator, and not meaning to brag, but I was the highest ranking member for a good chunk of that time. My point is that I would love to help, and I'm a good person to ask. Additionally, most if not all, of the members here would love to see you stick around, and I don't doubt that many of them would be willing to give you advice as well.

I think its great that you jumped right in, but like all things in life, there is a bit of a learning curve you have to go through, and lets be honest, you're right at the beginning on Buxr. This means that you might hit a few snags and bumps along the way, but thats how learning works, and in the end its cool.

You apologize if I felt like I was unduly singled out? I WAS unduly singled out! The other community member's comments were not "good & useful" advice. They wanted to HELP?? me? They wanted me GONE! Give me 1 member who'd like me to stick around? Being called names by so-called "professors" of the game? They're trying to help? I'm neg-crazy? I was just doing what it said, "Do you honestly feel that it is not a good deal? Then vote it down, and say why!" I know better now. If you do, you'll be attacked & a social outcast. Who really needs to learn here?

Hey I'm one of the people that wanted to help. I don't want you gone. Heck half the time I feel like I don't know what's going on around here. I have been singled out in the past for things on here also so I know it feels. Buxr is a wonderful community but it also has alot of ups and downs just like everything in life. There's a few unspoken rules around here it seems and I wanted to point them out to you. That's why I left the message I did on the Old Navy deal and on this topic. Here it is again in case you didn't read it:
Some people do not wish to subscribe to every e-mail newsletter to get their sales. I for one do not ever shop at Old Navy so I don't subscribe. However if a sale is good enough I will go to a store or website that I wouldn't normally visit.

If you truly think it is on ongoing deal than just flag it as low/no value and let the community decide.

I just hoped that you would read that and see how most of the community votes. Most of us on here just want to get along and save some money. I know there are a few people (not pointing fingers because everyone has there moments) that seem really mean at times, but once you get to know them they are really not that bad.

I think that if you just give Buxr a chance that you will learn to love it and this can all be behind you. You've posted some really good deals so far.

The only thing that could be perceived as negative that I want to say is, just remember what goes around comes around. That's just only true in life but true here too. I've seen numerous voting wars and they can get ugly sometimes. I don't mean it in a bad way and I hope you understand my context.

Let first alleviate your fears. There are only two parties that can truly force you to be gone. Yourself and Admin. Its seems rather clear that you want to stick around, and hopefully it seems clear that Admin would prefer to have you around.

Second, realize that name calling from one or two members is not representative of all member ways of reacting. Each of us is a little different on how we respond to things. I've been watching comments for the last few days, its one of those things mods like to do, and there have been at least 3 members trying to give advice or talk to you about their perspectives on voting down deals in a respectful and pleasant fashion. I'm betting that in the chaos of all the deals posted that you might have just missed those. I'm not saying you're right or wrong, but only that those perspectives may help to shape your own possibly, or at least help you understand what might be rubbing other members the wrong way.

    Deby,

I'm another that would like to see you stick around. I just wanted to see you actively join in on the discussions of the community. I think that new members are a vital part of Buxr and promote growth of the site.

I'm sorry that you feel picked on, but I would like to see you fit in to the team a lot better so that you can too earn some extra cash and benefit from the site's valuable offers.

Feel free to ask any questions you wish and I'm sure there will be many that will come to your assistance, including myself.

Mooncow, yes, I see how much you want to help. So much so that you are still talking negatively behind my back.

"she just now posted her very first discussion topic asking pretty trivial questions about negative votes clearing demonstrating she doesn't get it.

I think we all should be a bit patient and attempt to explain her how things work and steer her into the right direction. Some people get it sooner than the others, this might be the case of "other" for one or another reason.

That's so nice. Really appreciate it. Lot of positive comments there. Real helpful. MS does cause brain lesions but let me assure you, my IQ's just fine. Do have a masters & was an asst principal when I was able to work.

Ya'll post topics on your deals & grocery coupons & my topic is trivial? (Yes, I'm from south)

I noticed that you only vote positively & for EVERYTHING your friends post & NEVER vote neg. You want me to find better deal & download for every neg. vote? Hmm, is that what Buxr asks us to do? Now how much time would that take. I get it now. NEVER vote neg. or it will hurt your feelings & might take you a step away from your $5-$10. Notice I don't resort to personal attacks & backstabbing.

See what I'm up against, Solstice?

The ONLY thing that could be percieved as negative? from helpful Houtex:
"Scanned coupons are not permitted on Buxr, and your reproducing them in that way would be fraud"

Wasn't that Walgreen coupon from the paper scanned?

"The proper way to make your negative statement is flag the deal as "low value" and to post a link to the proof that it is an identical item."

Who's going to spend hours doing that. I noticed you've never voted neg. & vote + for ALL your friends.

"So they may not share your limited opinion,"

How rude, I have a "limited" opinion?

"So unless you can provide a link to or post a better coupon, then I suggest that you simply not vote..."

Again, what y'all are saying, don't do what the instructions ask. Never vote neg. unless you want to spend an hour proving why which is why y'all only vote +, always for your friends on every deal they post. Sounds like a good 'old boys club to me where noone else is welcome. Rude things were said about me behind my back from day 1! None of the powerplayers have said a kind or helpful word which wasn't negated behind my back. And what goes around, come around sounds like a threat, not helpful advice.

Nice positive discriptions of me. Do you always discuss people behind there backs? Why don't you ask me directly? No, I had not read the comments that were left. Didn't know any were. And I also saw not a single neg. vote except for me. Only pos. for friends & for all there deals. Thanks a lot.

I was not talking about you behind your back. I didn't feel that I needed to call you out directly and, obviously, you were able to figure out that I was addressing you. Again, I did not have anything bad to say about you; I just wanted to make sure that you were aware things were being said so that you could join the discussions. And, in case you haven't noticed, I have been very consistently giving you positive votes on a lot of your deals ever since you've joined the site.

Not a single person on here has voted neg. on a deal. Talk about neg. votes though. Look at Midgets profile. About 50 on me. Obsessed! Only + for all friends. I didn't know that was what BUXR was asking members to do. Obviously if you can't gush over a deal, don't say a word. Let those sales flyers, grocery coupons, & scanned newspaper coupon inserts go, in fact vote + & everyone will be happy again. And by the way, I speak my mind.

If there were only 1-2 members acting badly then why did 2 vote pos. on Midgets threat:

"you need to cut out this negging crap deby or you're gonna find yourself with absolutely NO support on any deals you post."

She also voted neg on 60 comments I made, 1 giving advice to get a better shipping rate, leaving a permanent scar on my Member Reputation points. She shouldn't have that kind of power-trying to destroy a beginner & my neg points should be reduced since they were caused by primarily 1 bitter person.

She also has voted pos. on EVERY deal her friends post except mine which she neg voted!

She is obviously breaking rules w/no reprecussion.

    Deby,

There are definitely some truths to be found in what you said, but I'm not going to discuss those truths. Instead lets set those aside, and refocus back on helping you get situated. We can always return to them later if need be.

I'm going to give you some advice, and ask you to do some things, which I'm hoping you will follow and be willing to do. If you do these things I think it will help you learn, as well as increase your own comfort level here.

    1. For 2-3 weeks don't vote negative on a deal unless you see somebody else vote negative on it first.
    2. When they vote negative on the deal, read their reasoning and logic.

I think if you do these two things you're going to find out a lot of interesting things. If nothing else, just humor me, and we can always come back here in 2-3 weeks. Smile
