Refer-a-friend ideas

submitted on February 3, 2010 by equipurple in "Buxr Website / Contests"
Is a month too soon to make a friend a "good friend?" Could your contest entry be on a rolling 90-day basis?

Can you incentivize the refer-ee? For example, when a new member joins based on a referral, they have are given an incentive bonus to become a good friend. During that incentive period, Buxr hopes they become a useful member of the community, and are then hooked on Buxr's unique deal-shopping-with-community-and-prizes concept.
This could even be launched on a limited time basis to see if it works. We just had a similar concept posted about getting $10 for submitting 10 reviews on Amazon(?).

Sounds like a good idea, but I think that the prize for winning the refer-a-friend contest should be put back to $150, like it was originally...

We could probably give the refer-ee a $10 sign-up bonus redeemable upon reaching $25 balance (as usual). Do you think it is enough of an incentive?

My concern is not about the new members not actively participating in the contests. Submitting deals is just not for everyone. We do however want to reward the referrers for bringing in their friends to the site who then stick around and comment, shop & further spread the word.

Rolling 90 days doesn't sound bad but it may be logistically difficult to organize the "rolling" part. I think lowering the limit to 3 and re-instating the requirement that the new members need to stay active for at least a few days (vote and comment) makes more sense.

Then why not tie the incentive to points or rank, rather than dollars. When a refer-ee reaches 100 points (beginner) or 200 points, they get the prize. Points are tied to votes and comments, and are more achievable than dollars, especially if not submitting deals. You might consider gift cards (or swag?) instead of just cash, may have a slightly higher perceived value.

How about a special badge with a count of referred friends who gained X points or more?

Buxr Bling is always good! But I think you want to give incentive to the referr-ee, not just the referer. I have no control over a referred friend who may try it for a few days and decide not to like it. If the friend knew there was a prize waiting, that might entice him or her to stick around longer and might eventually like it more.

May I request a mouse pad? I never received one. I did receive the awesome Buxr mug though.

Sorry, it must have been an oversight. You sure qualify since you finished in top 20 last month. I will mail one to you with this month's prizes. Make sure you have the correct postal address in your profile

I like the points idea. It would drive people to become active and get hooked like the rest of us. Mr Green I've wanted to refer my mom to the site but I don't know how often she would be active. If she isn't much, I have been scared that she will count as a negative friend. I know for sure though that any kind of incentive to use it more would get her hooked. Even if it was just $5 or something. To save money and make money is an awesome concept that most people would probably grab on to once they get past the initial overload. I know when all the rules changed, I wasn't active for a while. It's a lot to grasp onto. I'm still not even sure how everything works anymore.
