"Real user" member reviews

submitted on May 25, 2012 by samm_is in "Buxr Website / Contests"
This is one for Yan...
Is it feasible to add a section for user reviews of a specific product, that can be linked to the product whenever it goes on sale? I know many sites - especially Amazon, have a huge trove of user reviews.
However, I still believe that a statement like the one Clover made on the posting about the 23 inch HP monitor, stating that she got the 20 inch version for about the same price, and that she loved the monitor, might prove to be very useful, and add more value to the site (http://www.buxr.com/deal/hp-23.....r_112677).
1. Would you be in favor of 'real' user 'reviews' stating price paid, and whether they are satisfied with product/store?

If enough members support it (comments & votes Wink ) I will make sure to allocate time for this feature.

I think this feature would prove very helpful. A lot of deals are posted where the item is VERY discounted only because it is a piece of junk. Sometimes the website it takes you to has no reviews so you have to do a bunch of searching. If the item name is not completely correct or the model number isn't listed, then this can be a headache. I think if there was a spot for people to post reviews that people would probably help each other out. I know that when I see a product that I own as a deal I try to post a short review. It just gets annoying to have to do that every time it gets posted. It would be nice if the review was linked to the item and not the particular deal. I don't know if that is possible though.

Sometimes members post deals on specific sites that don't have reviews or "stars." I really don't like to go hunting for the reviews. I have had some members ask me to post the reviews when I post a comment such as "nice reviews." It would be nice if they searched and posted the reviews. Big Grin

I'm in favor of the idea, I do see that some members aren't, I would be interested in hearing why they feel it wouldn't be a good addition.

It is helpful--but another step sometimes after a long forgotten deal--to post the satisfaction with the product and merchant and deal. It is certainly helpful to know what other buxrites have said, particularly those known for expertise in various categories. I doubt, however, that the volume of deals and products, and the relatively small number of active members, would result in a great deal of useful activity.

The last thing you mentioned (about volume) is what worries me. We don't have many members and so it is very unlikely we will produce any significant number of reviews.

I guess the trick is to come up with some compromise, a feature that would not be too sophisticated (so it doesn't take too much time/effort) and yet useful to the community.

I was actually thinking of posting notes along the lines of "I have this. It works very well, and was well worth the X$$$s I paid for it. Its an even better deal now that its only y$s".
This DOES NOT entail detailed reviews of a product posted several days back (of course, its great if that happens), but would apply to new or current deals that you happened to spot.

I also like the idea of being able to link these comments to another instance of the same/similar product (being offered by the same or different store), in much the same way price history shows up for some products.

Another related question - a new member I'd referred some time back asked me if she should go back and flag/comment on any deal she actually ended up getting.
Can we have a "I bought this!" flag and a "I have this already!"?

Maybe even a "Better values out there" - given the discussion I had with a very miffed psplove in the comments section of http://www.buxr.com/deal/sony-.....rch/laptop

You can make a comment on any deal that is still a alive regardless of the time. It just helps the community. I think it would be too much if there were to be flags on it. It is just a courtesy to show people how you liked the product...no more plus ups on comments after the deal is past it's time frame. My opinion.

Ah - but the idea is to have some historical reference of product price/value/user experience, rather than just historical price alone.
I thought the flags might be an easier, cleaner implementation than linking comments.

I think we can have some sort of compromise between a quick 'i own this' and a full fledged product review. There is one technical difficulty here though, these 'reviews' or 'flags' will only survive across deals if there is a price comparison via PriceGrabber, or if this is exactly the same product offered by the same merchant. For all other cases there is no mechanism in place to tie different deal submissions together. Anyway, I don't mean to overwhelm you with technical details, what I mean to say is that there are some challenges to overcome before this idea can become a feasible and useful functionality...
