Hot or Not?

How do "popularity" stars and "deal alerts" work?

submitted on November 2, 2013 by mdshopper1 in "Buxr Website / Contests"
i have a question about the "popularity" stars. how are they determined? if one offer has 18 likes and another offer has 18 likes, how come one has 4 stars and the other has 1 star? thanks.....hope everyone is having a great saturday so far!

That is a terrific question. I have wondered about that also and asked a fellow buxr member who wasn't sure. Looked at wiki but couldn't locate the answer.

Yes, great question! The Stars reflect how popular the deal is with Buxr shoppers and is not related to the number of votes the deal has received. It takes into account things like number of page views the deal page receives, number of deal alerts the deal submission triggers, number of times visitors click on the deal link to check it out, etc. Time is also considered to calculate the intensity. So a deal can get 4 stars in the first 2 hours after posting and then fall back to 3 or 2 stars as the interest subsides.

Deal Popularity is one of the sorting options for the Hot Deals dashboard module that you see on the main page and you can also see that information on each individual deal. It does not affect the outcome of the daily contests, but I think it's interesting and gives us an idea of what visitors to the site view and follow. It tells us how "hot" a deal is. For example, freebies are usually very popular, and it's fun to watch how the number of stars change over time, or if they stay at 4.

interesting, thanks for the explanation HOUTEX.....not sure i fully understand, but it does help a bit! sometimes i just view a deal, ,but if the offer code is listed i dont even click on the link to go to the deal directly. if it is a store that is offered on one of the rebate sites, then i prefer to click through to the store via those sites and THEN use the code. LOL, now i have to figure out how "deal alerts" are triggered!

Here's some help to set deal alerts -
These are really great if you want to get an email as soon as a deal is posted for that store or product. I created alerts for t-shirts and offers from, and I never miss a deal on them! You can add an alert from any deal page or coupon page, and also add or delete them from your profile page

Another tip - there is a search block at the top right on any wiki page to enter the term you'd like to find.
