Please read - Monthly contest rules have changed

submitted on September 1, 2009 by YanBz in "Buxr Website / Contests"
We just announced the changes in our monthly blog post. For those of you who don't read our blog (or don't subscribe to the mail list) I want to repeat that we are changing the monthly contest rules. Here are the details:

http://www.buxr.com/blog/2009/.....y-contest/

Both Mike and I hope the changes will make the monthly contests more fun and will open opportunity for more people to enjoy the bargain hunting game at Buxr.

Just want to add that for this month we are also increasing the average number of daily contest prizes from 5 to 6. As for the monthly prizes, we will announce them later in the week, very likely tomorrow.

The changes do look a bit overwhelming and I am sure you will have a lot of questions. Please shoot them out in the comments and I will do my best to answer every single one. Smile

YanBz, It seems new members such as myself are excluded from this since i don't have 50 points yet?

If i read the contest rules right it seems this way.

No reason to get discouraged. With the new rules it will take you just 5 good deal votes to earn 50 points which I am sure will happen very soon if you actively vote. Smile

So the big change is that we now get points from comment votes, right?

This is right, comments and discussion topics. You give 2 points to the submitter and get back 1 point for your vote. The amount of points you get with deal votes has also changed (increased)

I have another great idea...Maybe like once a month, have a "Double Points Day" It could really be a good idea if it was a random day and NOBODY (except yan and mike) knew about it.

That would be fantastic! Surprising the Buxr users when they least expect it Exclaim Or may be announce the double prize day ahead of time (1 day may be) so that the competition would get more interesting. Yan, Mike..you got to think about this Big Grin

I'm very intrigued to see how these new changes will work, and the new "random power" with every 100 points accrued looks like a little chaotic fun being throw into the mix.

I think its going to reduce attempts to "game" the contest even further, as now simply sitting and watching Buxr 24 hours a day and voting last minute on all deals will no longer be enough, nor will simply voting up every winning deal and then sitting back otherwise.

Members might actually be more encouraged to be kinder to one another as well... or one can hope. Smile

What if there was a cutoff on voting? Meaning, within a certain time limit votes are worth 20 points. But after 12 hours of the deal being posted, they are now worth 15 or 10?
I'm just saying it might encourage early voting. Some people always wait to see if a deal will become "hot" or "not" then decide if they'll vote. Thus always getting that extra point (or in this case 20).

LOL, no, inflation is here to stay. It was inevitable to avoid fractional points (which would be very confusing). By the way, I know for sure a few members received awards last night but I don't see anybody using them. Confused

Go to this page if you are not sure: http://www.buxr.com/awards If you see anything there then go to the deal page for any of the deals you submitted and look for new buttons in the area where you usually see deal tags and 'share this deal' link. Here is how they look:

Yan, Correct me if I'm wrong...

It sounds like you can sit on the Power Awards until you are ready to use them. (i.e. Its possible to save up multiple of any one kind.)

However, it also sounds like if you don't use them in any given month, that they then disappear at the end of the given month.

      Is this correct?

We give away awards at 100 points of your total score, not your monthly score. There are currently no plan to have an expiration for awards so you can accumulate as many as you want (and of multiple kinds).

I just ran the contest, your score is not "1829" and you should have received an award. Check your awards page.

    How does "highlighting" work?

Is this like a permanent activity push, where it always shows up as the first listing on the activity + recency pages? I'm just not sure what it does at this point, but the rest are self explanatory.

Without knowing, it might be fun to add add power to that effect.

Sometimes a really good deal gets buried and forgotten if its a heavy submission day.

You will have a good idea once somebody uses it. It doesn't push the deal, it just highlights the background (on the deals page, home page, and on the individual deal page as well). We speculated about creating an award that would act like a 'sticky' deal but considered it to be too powerful and negatively impacting shopping experience (we have to keep in mind that not all come to buxr to play Wink ).

That makes sense, as well as a good point about casual shopping visitors, and a person can always leave a comment once for a little push if they think it is a great deal.

      Example: http://www.buxr.com/deal/verba.....ch/dvd+100

Another idea for a power prize would a "Timer Reset", where once used on a deal, the 24 hour timer restarts and is visible on the post itself, but where it keeps all its current votes accrued, but then it has to wait for contest inclusion until the next contest period when that "new" timer expires.

This could be used to push a deal off until the next period, and/or giving it more time to get a little more voting love. Its not quite contest exclusion, but not quite a guaranteed advantage either.

That is correct, 5 total comments per member. You can vote 5 comments by another member and get 5 more points. Only positive votes result into a credit.

Every member gets a random award independently from each other and the chances of getting one or the other kind are not even (e.g. you are more likely to get the 'hightlight my deal' than 'vote my deal' award)

I was looking at the awards and one is to take a deal off contest.

This is to take your own deal off the contest and not someone elses right?

The only reason i can see for this award is if you're getting the daily worst deal right?

You probably have seen already the highlighted deals. Just if you are curious, here is the first time anyone used "Vote up my deal" award...

    http://www.buxr.com/deal/stear.....ting_32451

...and barely missed the prize. The threshold today was 13 votes but the deal had 12 (including pablos17's own vote).

If someone uses the "off contest" award, will those points still count towards the "bonus $5- prize" or will it exclude it. Also, is there a cut off on when to use it (before or after 24 hours)?

Only contest eligible votes count towards the bonus $5 - this has always worked like this.

I have to double check this but I believe right now you can use the "off contest" award even after the 24 hours cut off time. This will have to change though since allowing people mess with the contest while I run it may result in all sorts of nasty glitches.
