Online Advertising Reaches All-Time High, and Use of Social Media is On the Rise

Do you feel like you are being bombarded with ads on every website you visit? It's true!

The Interactive Advertising Bureau reported an increase in online ad spending, as well as search marketing and mobile ads.

Online ad spending hit $26 billion last year in the U.S., representing a 15 percent gain year over year. In the fourth quarter alone, advertisers spent $7.45 billion on the Web, jumping 19 percent compared with the fourth quarter of 2009.

Search advertising continued to be the most popular choice among advertisers, totaling $12 billion last year. Advertisers spent $9.9 billion on "display-related" ads, including banners, sponsorships, and digital video commercials. Classifieds and directory ad spending hit $2.6 billion.

Google secured 82.6 percent of all search ad dollars spent in the fourth quarter, while Yahoo and Bing captured 17.4 percent. However, search isn't everything. Social networks are playing an ever more important role in marketing efforts.

Facebook is especially important for companies around the world. According to findings from Econsultancy and SEMPO, 47 percent of firms in North America and 45 percent of companies outside the U.S. and Canada use Facebook's pay-per-click (PPC) advertising service. Consulting agencies reported that 74 percent of their North American clients are using Facebook's ads, while 69 percent of those elsewhere around the world are doing the same.
