New technology for supermarket food waste

submitted on March 28, 2014 by equipurple in "Stores / Merchants"
Great article about a new solution to supermarket food waste that grinds, liquefies, and turns it into a sale able plant fertilizer. Eye opening stat: supermarkets create 600 lbs of food waste a day. Also nice that the story notes a question that the new technology might negatively affect food pantry donations.

Surely they would not compost good produce suitable to donate to food pantries! It's disturbing to think they would throw in edible food as well. If it's "waste" then it shouldn't impact the donations at all.

You certainly have to wonder. In so many ways you're tending towards "single stream," Let's hope that they keep the donations a separate stream.
