3. When buying other Gift Cards
4. Auction Sites
5. Specialized Gift Card Sites
6. Daily Deals
7. Bonuses for buying other merchandise

With the holiday shopping season rapidly counting down, shoppers will increasingly give up on finding the perfect gifts and instead buy gift cards for their loved ones. Yet while many of those shoppers will pay full price for gift cards, you shouldn't, because discounts are everywhere.

A recent study of affluent consumers showed that nearly half the women surveyed and almost a third of men wanted gift cards or cash to spend as a holiday gift. A separate American Express (AXP) survey pegged the figure for women at closer to 60 percent, with gift cards for retailers and restaurants topping the wish list.

Great topic. I always look for incentives when buying gift cards. A lot of restaurants offer a bonus card for me when buying gift cards. If it's a restaurant I frequent, I'll buy the gift card to use myself just to get the extra $10+ bonus card to use later.

I use for discounted gift cards. These are previously used and may be scratched up, etc. so I only use them for myself. I would'nt want to give one as a gift. J C Penny cards are discounted 20% or more when they have them.

    Nice article, thanks Siggy.
As I have mentioned in the past, we have a very successful gift card program as a fundraiser from my synagogue. We buy cards from card wholesalers (we use United Scrip other popular ones are Great Lakes Scrip and ScripPro discount (profit as we sell them at face value) varies from 1.5% to 15% and occasionally higher. We average about 4.5% profit. With 30 hardcore buyers and another 50 occasional or one-time buyers, we bring in $10-15K per year for the synagogue.
But many of the deals we can get otherwise, like in this article, give us a bigger discount.
Anyway, back to the article, we have bought cards on other discounts directly for our fundraising program. was a nice deal. We have bought at wholesale clubs as well. Shaws Supermarkets does a promotion a few times a year offering a $20 coupon on your next visit when you buy $100 in gift cards.
