Netflix Pays Nearly a Billion Dollars to Add Paramount Pictures, Lions Gate and MGM

submitted on August 11, 2010 by pablos17 in "Stores / Merchants", last updated on August 13, 2010 by YanBz
Finally, more movies will be available on Netflix. I may actually reconsider signing up again.

At a cost of nearly one billion dollars, Netflix on Tuesday said it would add films from Paramount Pictures, Lions Gate and MGM to its online subscription service.

It was a coup — albeit a costly one — for Netflix, which knows its needs to lock up the digital rights to films as customers stop receiving DVDs by mail and start receiving streams via the Internet. The deal will commence Sept. 1.

Under this new agreement, movies from those studios can come to Netflix 90 days after they debut on the premium pay-tv and subscription VOD services.

Meaning you can't stream new movies until they have been on cable or pay-per-view for 90 days.

The photos used in almost all the ads are misleading, as they almost all feature a image of Iron Man 2, but mention that Iron Man will should be available September 1st with the new deal. See what they did there?

Watching a "big" movie 90 days after it has been out on cable channels like HBO is not a real advantage to me as I would of most likely already seen them. I'm not the type to watch movies more than once generally.

Netflix is by far one of the best investments I've made. They never fail me!
