Need some help finding a laptop battery

submitted on May 22, 2010 by outcastplo313 in "Products / Gadgets"
So I have a toshiba satellite l305d-s5868 laptop. I've had it for about 2 years now and it seems as if each time I use it the battery life is shorter and shorter. It now dies after 30 minutes of using it. I don't know why it got like this it used to last a couple hours, but I would appreciate it if someone could help me find a battery with a very long life. I'm not really good with computers at all, so if you need any more info. about the laptop just ask.

Do you have the 6-cell or extended capacity 9-cell battery? In either case, if you frequently shallow charge and discharge the battery, its meter can become inaccurate. So the first thing you can try is to let the battery discharge completely (literally let it run all the way down), and then try charging it fully again. Hopefully that will work for you, without any expense. If the laptop is plugged in a lot with a fully charged battery, the battery can also become damaged due to overcharging.

The second thing you can do for free is just to make it a desktop replacement - remove the battery and leave it plugged in when you use it.

We have a much older Toshiba Satellite model and the very same thing happened to our battery. It is otherwise a very good laptop. I don't know if the poor battery life is typical for other Satellite models. If you order a new battery from Toshiba, it's about $129 - $149. http://www.toshibadirect.com/t.....4551727025
We were able to save money when we found a 3rd party replacement battery for about $75.
There is currently a 3rd party equivalent for your battery made by Hi-Capacity on Amazon for about $40 (only 3 left, though) http://www.amazon.com/Hi-Capac.....055&sr=1-1
We enjoyed good battery life until the new battery was past the 1-year warranty and then the same thing happened again. Now we get only about 30-45 minutes per charge.

Maybe there are some more Toshiba owners out there who can comment about their experience.

I think the problem was due to overcharging.
I think I'm just going to stick with keeping it on the charger unless anyone else has any suggestions.

I forgot to mention that our Toshiba manual says that "after a period of time the battery will lose its ability to perform at maximum capacity and will need to be replaced. This is normal for all batteries." They also advise "never leave batteries in the charger for more than a week at a time," as "doing so may reduce the potential charge of the battery."

At http://www.toshibadirect.com/t.....oid=366628 there are a lot of complaints about short battery life in the reviews, so this must be typical with Toshiba batteries.

We have not had this kind of problem with Dell or Acer laptop batteries, but after 4 years and a lot of use, we did purchase a replacement battery for an Apple laptop.

There's a shareware program to monitor battery charge/discharge rate, etc. for PC at http://www.passmark.com/products/batmon.htm

or (if anyone else needs it) for MacBook at http://www.coconut-flavour.com.....index.html

I didn't know that and I've been doing it. Hopefully no damage so far. Thanks for the info. Smile
