Nasty Storms Ahead For All Of Us

submitted on June 10, 2010 by midget in "Member's Lounge"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/.....tormsahead

The sun is about to get a lot more active, which could have ill effects on Earth. So to prepare, top sun scientists met Tuesday to discuss the best ways to protect Earth's satellites and other vital systems from the coming solar storms.

Bad news for gizmos

People of the 21st century rely on high-tech systems for the basics of daily life. But smart power grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial services and emergency radio communications can all be knocked out by intense solar activity.

I heard about it on NPR yesterday - scary stuff. The next solar activity cycle is upon us. Here is an interesting article at NASA that briefly explains how sun storms form: http://science.nasa.gov/scienc.....rmwarning/

I read this last night which made me do a little more searching about it. Turns out 2012 seems to be the year they are going to peak. Here's another article about it: http://www.examiner.com/x-2912.....s-collapse

Oh and I should add that I'm not one of those people that thinks the world is going to end. I am however a little more freaked out than most as it would be my daughter's 6th birthday. Just thinking that if people were right about all of the stuff would just suck.

Our society relies so heavily on gizmos nowadays I wonder how this storm is going to affect us all.
Are people going to heed the warnings now and prepare or is it gonna be ignored in the hopes the scientists are wrong or it won't be as bad as they claim?

If I had to guess I would think only a small percentage of people will prepare, and the people that don't will try to leech off the ones that do.

It's pretty crazy to think that we may have to start taking into account the weather in space, as well as the weather on earth, when planning for the day.
