Mom wants to get Dad an iPad

submitted on December 9, 2011 by equipurple in "Products / Gadgets"
My mom wants to get my Dad an iPad. I know prices won't change much but bundles and addons will be the difference. From previous discussions we know that this coming week will be the best week to buy, and I told her to wait until now. I am keeping my eyes open so I can tell her what and where to get, but I'd appreciate your posts of iPad deals and bundles. Thanks, buxrites.

I know this is not the answer you are looking for, but... why not go with an Android tablet? What does iPod have that Android doesn't?

I agree! It would be less expensive and your Dad would get the same benefit and maybe even more.

I assume you are getting the IPAD 2 and not the 1st Gen.

Keep an eye on retailers which don't charge TAX i.e. Macmall.com. That saves you an extra 5-10% depending on where you are.

Also like Yan mentioned, why not get an Android Tablet. The new OS ( Ice Cream Sandwich) coming out is very efficient and has great visual appeal. I would recommend at least doing a Hands on with one of them before you get an IPAD2.

The ASUS Transformer Prime is going to be cheaper than the IPAD 2 and has lots more to offer. It's thinner than the ipad2. Has a quad core processor ( ipad2 has 2 cores). Expandable memory, add-on dock and the list goes on.

I did play with the IPAD 2 but enjoyed it for only a little time. I got bored very soon since I could not customize anything. But again, I look for those things. If your dad is not to techie and does not want too much customizations / then Ipad2 would work for him. But again - try reading about the Transformer Prime before you make your decision. It's more value for money.

Also if you are getting an IPAD make sure it's an IPAD2 and not the 1st gen. The 2nd generation is a vast improvement to the first one.

Dad is a Mac guy for 20-odd years and will be celebrating his 80th birthday in January (what the iPad is for). I will look at an android, but I don't want to mess up his world with a change of OS.

Thanks for all your help! Mr Green
The winning retailer was Radio Shack. $499 for the iPad2 plus a $50 Radio Shack gift card. Another $50 Visa gift card for paying by Radio Shack credit card.
I ordered him a 3-pack of screen protectors for iPad2 on eBay for $3.29 with free shipping from a US-based vendor, so he'll have screen protection this week too.
Thanks again buxr friends, and a Happy Saturnalia to you all.
