Mobile friendly buxr

submitted on November 6, 2009 by phunkeey in "Buxr Website / Contests"
Has anyone considered a mobile friendly version of buxr?

These pages could list the deals in a single column making it easier to browse deals from your mobile device.

Would that be hugely difficult?

You won't believe but this is exactly the thought what I have been pondering about in the past couple of months. We originally thought launching an application for a smart phone would be the best way to tackle the problem however this doesn't seem like an efficient investment of time since by offering an application you basically tie yourself to a single smartphone platform (and all the support that it implies). Multiple platforms - more work/support.

Another alternative is building a generic mobile version of the site that would work with any phone. The problem with this idea is that some of the features would have to be sacrificed due to the screen restrictions and "finger interface" specifics. Another thought, with smart phones getting bigger screens every year, soon loading Buxr in "full mode" will not be an issue at all (it is already working pretty well on phones like iPhone or G1 when you are using a fast connection like 3G or WiFi). So do you really want to lose some of the functionality (like say ability to vote or comment, or navigation links to certain pages) for the sake of getting a nice one-column list of deals on your phone? And if you do, which functionality (and/or parts of the site) do you consider insignificant when you browse Buxr from your phone?

I visit often on my touch (on it now actually) and it's not hard to make do by zooming in an app would be excellent though done forget iPhone is closing in on being market leader and ghat doesn't include the iPod touchs out there.

I think a nice one column list would suffice as long as it preserves the essential functionality of buxr that is to vote on the deal and to link to the deal.

For anything else, reading and posting comments, seeing who voted, flagging, etc. can be done by simply linking to the full version.

I agree an app is unnecessary. Many "apps" are merely links to mobile sites.

The next problem to solve is the ease of posting deals from mobile devices. Currently it's possible but tedious.
