Microsoft to shut down Bing Cashback on July 30, 2010

submitted on June 4, 2010 by YanBz in "Member's Lounge"
I am still pondering over why Microsoft chose to kill it. Any thoughts?

One of the principles we have here at Bing is to constantly experiment and learn. We do this to ensure we are keeping pace with new social and technology trends, and can continue to deliver great value for our customers and advertisers.

As part of this “test-and-learn” mentality, we will be retiring the Bing cashback feature, which means that the last day you can earn cashback will be July 30, 2010.

Yes, the part that saddens me the most is that MS had to buy the technology from a start-up (Jellyfish) just to kill it later after they realized their attempts to salvage their search business using shopping cashback go nowhere. I loved Jellyfish

That sucks I used it from time to time to save some $$$ especially around Black Friday. My dad uses it religiously I don't think he purchases a think online without trying to get Bing cashback and cashback on his credit card.

I'm so upset! They just added Newport News w/25% cash back, Spiegel w/20%, Onestopplus, Womanwithin, Romans, BrylaneHome, Chadwicks all w/15%, Fashionbug w/11% back. Do I sound like someone who shops or what?
I will have to do a lot of Christmas shopping before July. Big Grin

I know why they are killing it. In a year or so M$ had Bing Cashback it it didn't make a dent in Google's market share. Here is the answer: Wink

MS needs smarter strategists and better product design + integration. Bing could have worked well, if they had a smarter strategy.

R.I.P BING! I'll miss you! Gotta use all my gift cards & return merchandise certificates by midnight tonight!! Funny in the last week, they dropped % back on some stores like Onestopplus.com from 15% to 10% back & on others also. Wanted to prepair us I guess.

Wanted to bring this back to your attention lest you've forgotten! Cry
