If you purchased certain cosmetics or fragrance products at certain department stores from May 29, 1994 through July 16, 2003 you may be entitled to obtain on a first served basis a free product under an approved class action settlement. Products will be available starting January 20, 2009.
You are a member of the class if you are currently a resident of the United States who purchased Department Store Cosmetics in the United States during the class period, which products were made, distributed and/or sold by the Manufacturer Defendants or Retailer Defendants listed below. You are not a member of the class, even though you bought the covered products during the relevant time period, if you fall into one or more of the following categories: all employees, officers, directors or agents (including attorneys) of any defendant, as well as any judge, justice or judicial officer presiding over this matter, and each such person’s immediate family.
It is quite a few stores and a long period of time (May 29, 1994 through July 16, 2003). I am pretty confident I qualify but how do I know for sure? Will they be asking for a prove of purchase of some at the store?
I did some research on this. First of all this was settled in California but applies everywhere in the US. Daniel Mogin, the attorney for the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, accused cosmetic manufacturers and retailers of conspiring to keep prices artificially high.
The website linked in the post was open for sign up since 2003 and everyone who did should have received a post card in the mail. Looking at the settlement it doesn't say anything about having to present a prove of purchase but it is possible that some stores will be asking for the card (read the comments to this blog post: http://www.bellasugar.com/2660050)

As part of a class action settlement, many major retail stores will be handing out up to $25 worth of free cosmetics starting January 20 to each customer. No prior proof of purchase or receipt is required to take part in this settlement offer. All that is required is that the customer show up at the stores and fill out a short form stating that they had bought something at the store during the period of 1994-2004 (no proof required).
I just returned from Macys, Dillards and Norstrom they are doing this is a very dignified way-you stand in line and they take a few people at a time. All you have to do is print your name and sign. Very nicely run! Enjoy!
