Malware may block thousands Monday, July 9 (so check your PC)

submitted on July 5, 2012 by DebsFreebies in "Member's Lounge"
Tens of thousands of Americans may their Internet service Monday unless they do a quick check of their computers for the DNSChanger malware that could have taken over their machines more than a year ago.

The problem began when international hackers advertised a scam to take control of more than 570,000 infected computers around the world. When the FBI went in to take down the hackers late last year, agents realized that if they turned off the malicious servers being used to control the computers, all the victims would lose their Internet service.

Thanks for the Heads Up! My Mom has been a victim and no matter how much I say "Don't click on it and don't give any information" she did it once. I think I have her convinced to call me when she gets these emails.

My mother used to do the same things. She would send me all the crazy forwards -- almost every day, too! Scam emails most of the time, I tried to convince her to at least look at snopes, with no luck. I always knew when she was ill because the forwards would stop coming. It's an amusing memory now but was frustrating at the time. She had always been such a sharp person.

That's all I keep hearing on the news right now.

So glad I prefer using my MSNTV2 to a computer for browsing the web. Smile

If you need to remove this or other malware from your PC, you can do it easily with McAfee's free Stinger tool (download it from http://www.mcafee.com/us/downl.....inger.aspx ). It's handy to have and regularly updated to cover new threats.

A couple of other resources include this list of links for help from Internet providers

and this document providing instructions to remove it manually
