Mall of America Plans to be Closed on Thanksgiving 2016 + More Stores Also Opt Out

UPDATE: Business Insider predicts that the busiest shopping day of 2016 will be on Friday, December 23, and not Black Friday. See http://www.businessinsider.com.....ar-2016-10

More retailers have announced that they too will be closed on Thanksgiving. The full list will be updated in the comments.

Officials at Minnesota's Mall of America have announced they are giving mall workers the holiday off so they can spend the day with their families. This also gives the stores more time to get ready for Black Friday, one of the biggest shopping days of the year, and "hopefully bring the enthusiasm back."
The nation's largest megamall notified employees and tenants Wednesday morning that it is reversing course this year and will close down as many of its operations as possible on the holiday. Nickelodeon Universe and the movie theaters will be closed for Thanksgiving for the first time in its 24-year history.

The mall’s 520-plus stores will still have the option to open on Thanksgiving, but mall officials expect fewer will choose to do so as a result.

The center, based in Bloomington, Minnesota, has been open on Thanksgiving since 2012. But mall officials told The Associated Press it wants to offer workers time with their families. The mall will re-open at 5 a.m. on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

I think that's great! I was the manager of a Gift & Collectible store back in the 90's and they opened every Thanksgiving night. No employees were allowed to take time off during that time or the whole month of Christmas.
