Macy's announced that stores will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving & released 10 Black Friday doorbusters

submitted on October 15, 2013 by HouTex in "Stores / Merchants", last updated on November 12, 2013 by HouTex
UPDATE: The list now includes Target, Best Buy, Penney's, Macy's, and Walmart....

Traditionally, Macy's was one of the few stores that did not open on Thanksgiving, but this year there are only four weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That means less time to shop, and Macy's is hoping to make sure shoppers are planning to go there. Most stores (750 of their 800 locations) will open at 8pm and remain open more than 24 hours, until closing around 10pm on Black Friday. Massachusetts stores will be excluded and open after midnight because of the state's blue laws that prohibit stores from opening on Thanksgiving.

For the first time in its 155-year history, Macy's is joining the parade of retailers turning Thanksgiving night into a shopping bonanza. Stores will open at 8 p.m. on the holiday, four hours earlier than in previous years, the company said Monday.

"Black Friday is the biggest shopping event of the year and brings with it a level of fun and excitement to our customers around the nation," Peter Sachse, Macy's chief stores officer, said in a news release.

Penney's has decided to match Macy's plans and also open at 8pm Thanksgiving night, after being one of the last to open on Black Friday morning last year.

Gosh this irritates the heck out of me. Typically you have to stand in line for a few hours before the doors open so that gets you there right at dinner time. What the heck are they thinking? I won't go to stores that open this early. I went to a midnight opening last year but that was pushing it. I wish everyone that had a problem with it would not shop and also email corporate and tell them. Maybe if they got yelled at enough, or didn't have good turn out, then they would get the hint.

I think my time is more valuable than saving a few bucks waiting to buy a black Friday item that has limited quantities.

Now Walmart has announced an earlier opening too - http://www.usatoday.com/story/.....s/3501037/
Following a slew of similar announcements from stores including Target, Best Buy and Macy's, Walmart said Tuesday that it will hold two major sales events at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday evening, two hours earlier than last year. This year has a six-day shorter holiday shopping season.

Walmart is upping its efforts to draw in more customers by offering what experts said were impressive deals and guaranteeing more products to customers in line during the Thursday sales.
