JCPenney Will Close 130-140 Stores by June 2017 (Take a Poll)

submitted on February 24, 2017 by HouTex in "Stores / Merchants"

JCPenney plans to announce by March 2017 as many as 140 store locations and two distribution centers that will close by the end of June. Although they didn't disclose how many jobs would be cut, they did say they were offering early retirement to 6,000 full-time employees. They're also making changes to match shoppers' preferences, like
reducing its emphasis on women's apparel previously geared toward business outfits and formal wear. Instead, the company is adding athletic and leisure wear, widening the availability of Nike and Adidas items and introducing more plus-size clothes.

This follows the announcement from Sears Holdings last month that they would close 150 Sears and Kmart locations, while Macy's plans to close 100 stores and cut 10,000 jobs nationwide.

There has been a decline in shopping at physical retail stores, while online shopping is on the rise. Amazon has announced that they expect to hire 100,000 U.S. workers this year as it continues to expand.
