I don't know why JCPenney feels it's necessary to change their logo, but it's the first redesign in the company's 40 year history. Comments on their facebook page indicate that not everyone likes it.
But it's an attempt to update the department store's image.
Target recently modified their logo quietly, and Starbucks is planning to launch a new design in March, coinciding with their 40th anniversary.
