JCPenney's Accidentally Issued Unlimited Code has Angered Customers

By now I guess everybody has seen the latest JCPenney fiasco!
It may have cost them a bunch of money and bad publicity - today it's on the television news.

As seen in this deal they sent out a code and serial number that they intended to be a one-time-use code. It was on a card mailed out to customers 2 weeks ago. But apparently they forgot to limit it and one of them got posted on several deal sites. Once JCPenney realized it (after many, many orders were placed) they posted on their Facebook page that they were only honoring the first order and cancelling the rest. But it seems that some multiple orders did get through. Many savvy shoppers ordered only $10 merchandise to get free goods, and all the inexpensive items like towels sold out right away and are backordered for months!

Giving away free stuff is the last thing JCPenney needs right now.

The retailer is short on cash and just announced that sales would be down 16% this quarter.

In what is either a mistake that will probably result in angry customers and canceled orders or a deliberate effort to rid its warehouses of towels and washcloths, JCPenney issued a coupon code earlier today for $10 off purchases of $10 or more.

Since you understand basic math, you can see right away that this is a prime opportunity to find small purchases adding up to $10 and then getting those things for zero dollars.

Customers are also complaining about price increases - like this comment on Facebook
I am so disappointed with JCP. went in the store yesterday and all the old tags were covered up with new HIGHER prices. Why don't you get it people??? Higher prices means you have to wait for a coupon

    Yeah, JCPenney is a mess. They probably forgot how to properly run promotions after several months of their 'no sale' policy.

    They can't get an order right any more. I ordered socks about a month ago, & instead of sending 10-13 size like any other retailer they sent some that came up to my knees! I will only buy in store from now on.
