Infusing vodka and other alcohols

Thanks debsfreebies for your comments in the Brewing vs Buying Coffee discussion for this topic.
A group of us have been experimenting with infusing vodka (mostly) with flavors. It does not necessarily save money over buying flavored vodka, but it is WAY more fun.

There is a bunch of sites and demonstration videos, (google infusing vodka) and it is a great activity for an adult group that meets regularly. Skittles seem to be a favorite. We started with Ferrara Pan's Lemonheads and Friends chewy candies. Separate the colors. Put each color in a clean container (mason jars work well). Cover with vodka. Leave in a cool dark place for 2-4 weeks. Strain and drink (shots). If you try Lemonheads, the yellow and green are undrinkable. Orange and Purple are somewhere between amazing and reminiscent of childhood cough medicine. Red was the best, but still was a far distant to cinnamon redhots.

Next round... Knob Creek bourbon with dried cherries. SPECTACULAR!
Espresso ground coffee in vodka (make in a french coffee press, let sit for only 15 minutes. AMAZING!
Vodka with Habanero peppers and lemon. Use it in Bloody Marys too.
Vodka with cantaloupe (2 weeks) Very tasty.
Vodka with star anise (4 weeks) Beats any licorice vodka you may have tried.

I used to put watermelon or apple jolly ranchers in a bottle of vodka, and let it sit for a few days. Makes for great flavored martinis when you add a little sweet and sour mix too.
