How To Grow Herbs Indoors During Winter

submitted on January 24, 2011 by orangearrows in "Products / Gadgets", last updated on February 3, 2011 by YanBz
It's cold outside, but don't give up on growing fresh greens at home. There are a variety of plants that you can bring indoors to keep your inner gardener happy and keep you supplied with fresh herbs.

If you live in a well-insulated home that is usually kept at a reasonable temperature (ideally above 60 degrees) throughout the winter, then the easiest strategy for growing herbs indoors is to bring in already mature plants and place them on a sun-filled south-facing windowsill for maximum sun exposure. Don't let your plants touch the cold glass of the window. If you don't have a sun-filled south-facing window, then your other option is to invest in grow lights.

We grow fresh herbs all year long in our kitchen bay window. Love fresh basil for pesto!

Has anybody tried the AeroGarden products? They take up very little space. They may be a bit more expensive, but are carried by Target http://www.target.com/s/175-56.....v_XS000000
and Amazon http://www.amazon.com/AeroGard.....83400971_4 and are often on sale.
They have 3 sizes/models and lots of accessories for them.

I received a rosemary plant for Christmas and I haven't killed it yet! Sunlight and plenty of water. I am ready to experiment with other herbs like basil and parsley. Thanks for the discussion! Smile

Be careful not to over-water. I killed my rosemary plant recently by giving it too much water (so I was told)... even after everyone I knew told me that it would be one plant/herb that I couldn't kill.

Thank you! I am good! It is a very healthy plant and I know not to over water. I love the smell of Rosemary! I am going with a friend to a Farmer's Market in Winter Park, Florida this weekend and I might purchase some new herbs there! Wink

I need to get on the band wagon. My wife buys dill, parsley, and cilantro every week (which we usually don't eat all) so these could be some substantial savings and fun time for kids
