How Branding Influences Children - They Literally Judge Food By its Cover

submitted on August 18, 2011 by HouTex in "Stores / Merchants"

ABC News reports that "advertising literally brainwashes young children into a baseless preference for certain food products." A recent study conducted at Yale University School of Medicine found that "most 3- and 5-year-olds who taste-tested a variety of foods said they preferred the ones in the McDonald's wrapper -- even though the foods were exactly the same" (including milk and carrots that didn't come from McDonald's). Results of the study are published in the August issue of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

McDonald's responded by saying that it is dealing with the problem, but public health officials argue that the marketing of foods of poor nutritional quality to children should be regulated, if not abolished.

Its for sure the kids know the "Golden Arches" even though the real arches don't exist outside of McDonald's any more.

So kids have learned that McDonald's is special. I know there are a lot of fat kids out there, but blaming McDonald's instead of parents is stupid. If you're a parent and your kid is overweight, it's because you aren't feeding them right.

My parents told me to eat my broccoli when I was a kid, and I did. I still go to go to McDonalds from time to time, but my mom cooked good, healthy meals too.

When I was a child my Mom was a single Parent raising two kids, Teaching for the school system during the day and waitressing at night so when we were off of school during the summer she could take us camping. We didn't go to Fast Food Restaurants. We made pizza out of a box (Appian Way.) I didn't realize what real pizza was (mozzarella) until Senior year in High School. Kids today live on convenience foods and it is sad. They don't eat as families at the dining room table because one or both parents aren't there. Sad

We did eat other things besides pizza out of the box. We always sat at the table and ate as a family with no TV in the background!
