You might have noticed that there has been plenty of deals lately on the low-end point & shoot cameras? You can buy a 12MP camera for as low as $60 shipped!
Apparently cell phones are at blame, as this article by iSuppli explains:
The low-end Digital Still Camera (DSC) market is coming under intensifying competitive pressure from cell phones that are sporting increasingly high-resolution image sensors, according to iSuppli Corp.
I have even read that the high megapixel cameras really don't even take that much better of an image and that a 7mp camera will work just fine when it comes to choosing a point and shoot camera. See article. http://petavoxel.wordpress.com.....e-example/
Exactly. I had a 7 megapixel camera and loved it. I was able to crop my pictures to about half the size but still get them blown up to 8x10s. I did that a few times and it worked great at it. But then I dropped it and it broke and I have a 10.2 megapixel camera now that supposedly takes HD video but it is junk. The picture and video quality are actually both lower. So just because the camera says its better, doesn't mean it is.
