Headed to Chicago

submitted on July 3, 2009 by Leighbra in "Member's Lounge"
The husband and I are headed to Chicago this month for a long weekend.

Is there anything that we just can't miss? We've never been there, and will be carless. We keep teasing the kids that we're going to go to Legoland, without them.

~Looking forward to tapping into Buxr's awesome wealth of knowledge

I have never been there, but I know that their pretzles and deep dish pizza is VERY good. A Cubs game maybe?

If you have never been to an Uno's Pizza now is your chance, because if memory serves the original location is in Chicago. Its definitely in the top 10 of pizzas I've ever eaten in my life.

I've ordered some cupcakes online that'll be in our hotel room when we get there.

Apple Bacon Cupcakes. They're either going to be life-changingly awesome, or horrible. But how can I resist bacon cupcakes?

Pizza is definitely at the top of our list. It seems funny that we'll fly some 1500 miles to go get a pizza.

Holy crap, have I got a list for you.

    1. Taste of Chicago (due to july 4th weekend) great fireworks display, good food, free admission and located in grant park (right by lake michigan).

    2. Lincoln park zoo (free admission but charge for parking)

    3. Hang out at the lake (always free, except for parking)

    4. Uno's pizza is awesome!

    5. Have you ever eaten at Portillos? Good fast food (i'm pretty sure it's not a nationwide chain)

    6. Take in the sights by walking down Michigan Ave and maybe do some shopping.

    7. Horse and carriage ride (about $30-$40 for 30 min)

    8. Sears tower: there's a new feature that will allow you to step onto a glass platform and you'll be able to see the city below your feet ( about $40 - $50 per person)

    9. Shed aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, Field Museum (look up their sites for info)

    10. Navy Pier is a Great time

    11. Catch a Cubs game ( my fave team) some tix are still available this weekend against the Brewers.

There's plenty more but that's just some things I do every year.

Also, you can take a water taxi from Michigan ave (located by NBC building) to sears tower or to Navy pier (bout $6 - $12 per person)

We live here and LOVE the Garfield Park Conservatory. It's FREE!!!! It's a bit off the beaten path. If you are downtown, check out the Cultural Center (FREE) on Michigan Ave. BEAUTIFUL!!! The mosaics are stunning & a part of history. You won't be sorry!

    What fantastic ideas!

We're not going til the last weekend of the month, so we have some time to sort things out. We're staying just off Michigan Ave, so it sounds like we're in walking distance of plenty of stuff to keep us busy.

Just this afternoon there was a food network special about Chicago. Yum! Maybe we'll just eat the whole time we're there Wink
