Google: Free 411 Phone Service

submitted on April 20, 2010 by HouTex in "Member's Lounge"
Seems like an odd thing for Google to offer, but they have a 411 phone service to find a location and number for businesses.
1. Dial 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411) to be connected to an automated service.
2. State your location and business type and Google will give you a list of available locations.
3. Once you choose one, Google will connect you for free.

This service is available for any phone, mobile or land line, in any location at any time.

Why "odd"? 411 is essentially search which is Google's bread

I guess so, but didn't expect them to offer a service off the Internet. I do appreciate being able to save the outrageous 411 charges from cell phone carriers.

I've been using this service for a while since I have Vonage at home and carry cell phones. Forget having to pay extra fees for 411 calls.

Another nice feature that I use frequently is finding a location by zip code (when prompted for city, state; speak zip instead) -good way to narrow down the listings it returns. Big Grin

Thanks for a great tip, pablos17!
I guess I'm a bit late to find this service, but glad to know about it now.

Yes, I have Goog411 and 800Free411 both stored in all my phones. If you call directory assistance, it really adds up fast. With both of these services, I get connected for free and I can also get a free text message with the listing info sent to my cell phone all totally free. Big Grin

Thanks to everyone for their comments, and especially equipurple and MrCheap for adding the other great resources to this thread!
Here's a comparison chart of the charges we save by using one of them instead of directory assistance through the wireless and long distance providers.

Shutting it down?! Eeek Are the other services as good? I like google, of course, because you're able to search near a zip code.
