Pet Sitters International created the first "Take Your Dog to Work Day" in 1999 to celebrate the great companions dogs make, and to encourage pet adoptions from shelters, humane societies and rescue groups. An estimated 500 companies participated the first year, and by 2003 that number had grown to 5,000.
According to a recent survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, nearly one in five companies in the United States allow pets in the workplace. Purina employees can bring their dogs to work every day; there's even a dog park on the campus. The owners of Sierra Trading Post raise German Shorthaired Pointers; five of them are company mascots and are always somewhere in the building.
