NICB's VINCheck is a service provided to the public to assist in determining if a vehicle has been reported as stolen, but not recovered, or has been reported as a salvage vehicle by cooperating NICB members. To perform a search a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is required. A maximum of five VINCheck searches can be conducted within a 24 hour period.

this is a useful tool. Especially when you might consider buying a used car from a private party.

I know I've had to check a vin more than once.

I just tested my car with NICB. All it said that my car is not "identified as a vehicle listed in the VINCheckSM Theft Records" and not a "Total Loss". There is no other details like you would get with a CarFax report Sad
