Free Credit Scores Now Easier to Get

As of Jan. 1, 2011, you have a new right to see one of the most important — and, until fairly recently, most concealed — indicators of your creditworthiness. And for free.

Yes, that's right. Your credit score. Without charge.

A federal regulation took effect Jan. 1 that requires credit card issuers and other lenders to provide millions of applicants with the reasoning behind the interest rate assigned to the new credit card or the loan.

This rule applies to anyone and everyone who is assigned an interest rate higher — even fractionally higher — than the best rate offered to other consumers.

Everyone is entitled to all 3 free credit reports annually. You have the right to dispute or request removal of derogatory information if the creditor is unable to verify your uncollectible debt within 30 days. Check out the annual credit report link: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

You can put a freeze on your credit report for $12 and those unknown collection agencies are not able to put an uncollectible debt on your credit report because they do not know your social security number.

Does this include the one that says I lived at the same house as my ex-husband and his ex-girlfriend that he left me for. I contacted Experian and stated that I never lived in the house and that was my ex's girlfriend's house who he left me for and that is what is says in my credit report! LOL! I am still laughing!

WOW, thats an interesting story Clover! The only other alternative is perhaps you and your X had joint accounts together before the "big breakup" and he used your X-girls address as his. Well anything is possible!

The freeze is a good idea if you are not planning on applying for credit anytime soon, like 6 months or more!

I get a free Transunion score every month at CreditKarma.com, but that probably is a site that most people here already know about, since it is free. I know it has some advertising there for credit cards, which I don't use, but it is a nice way to see how recent things I've done (closing or opening accounts, paying on time, etc.) have affected at least that one score. Also, if you pull one report per credit report company every 4 months, that helps you notice a mistake quicker and have quicker updates, assuming that they are reported to all three major bureaus...there are some minor credit reporting agencies that some places still use, as well.
