Flix-On-Stix...Coming Soon (Kiosks with Movies to USB Drives)

submitted on December 3, 2010 by pablos17 in "Products / Gadgets"

The idea behind Flix on Stix sounds a lot like Redbox, the buck-a-night DVD kiosks that are seemingly taking the country by storm. But rather than stocking machines with hundreds of DVDs, Flix on Stix kiosks would store movies digitally, and you'd take your rentals home on a USB memory stick.

Backed by vending-machine maker AVT Inc., Flix on Stix says it hopes to have its first kiosks up and running within three months, and plans to install about 20,000 kiosks within the next year — quite ambitious, given that Redbox is only now approaching the 30,000-kiosk mark.

I wonder how long it would take to hack one of these or see one get infected with a virus?

I was thinking the exact same thing. All it takes is one, and then every USB drive plugged in would carry it home. I don't see this one getting very far at all. Besides, how many users actually have devices at home that they can watch movies on a thumb drive, much less have a thumb drive with the storage capacity to store one?

I'd be too afraid to catch a virus. You just can't go plunging your stick into just anything and then back into your computer at home! (Does that sound a little vulgar?)

Wouldn't there be some way they could make so you could only remove info and not insert it somehow?
